Hats off , stand to attention and shake the hand of The Country Garage Service Advisor Graeme Potter next time you see him as he has only gone and completed his first and mad as it sound not his last Ironman he insists.
Now if you do not know what an Ironman is listen up - an Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation, consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-milebicycle ride and a marathon 26.22-mile run, raced in that order and without a break ! Graeme took part in Ironman Wales in Tenby, Pembrokeshire on 9th September 2018 This is the toughest Ironman course in Europe and one of the toughest worldwide due to the brutal nature of the course and it’s elevatedsurroundings. The event consisted of a 3.8km sea swim in Tenby’s North Beach, a hilly 180km cycle around Pembrokeshire and a full marathon through the windy streets of Tenby. The race began at 7am, and it’s a race against the clock to have the full course finished by midnight. Graeme managed to finish shortly after 9pm with a time of 14 hours and 8 minutes ...incredible ! Graeme training for a 8 full months on the lead up to this event, and in training he clocked up 175km of swimming, 5000km of cycling and 1200km of running for this one race. He was up training before he came to workand after he got home from work. Then when the weekend came no resting as he trained then too.
Last words from Graeme as you have earned all our respect : "The reason I chose Ironman, is because I wanted to challenge myself both physically and mentally. There is no better feeling than overcoming the mind and telling your brain to ‘shut its face’when it’s screaming that your body can’t do any more. Anything is possible!I trained with the Riada Triathlon Club from Ballymoney, and we had 3 athletes competing including myself. All 3 of us finished within 8 minutes of each other and I was able to cross the line with my club mate Eddiewhich was a nice touch, with club mate Paul, finishing shortly after. The support from the club, family and friends was a great help throughout this and I’ve been genuinely surprised by the kind words from my colleagues also." So next time you see Graeme behind the service desk at the Country Garage pay tribute to the athlete before you - respect from everyone at The Country Garage Ballymena !
